This document provides a common standard for Select and Elite members of the Association of Natural Health (AONH) to follow engendering confidence to the public of our members by specifying standards which the AONH require of those who belong to it.

It should be noted however, that this code’s principles cannot foresee all circumstances and situations which may be confronted during its member practitioner’s professional experience falling beyond the stated parameters of the code. As such, the principles listed in the AONH’s Code of Conduct are of an optimistic nature excluding prohibitions since negative scenarios may arise out of multiple scenarios of a legal matter as consequence of the practitioner’s lack of professionalism, unethical behavior, or other factors respective to the laws enacted in the State or Country where the member practices. The Code of Conduct is an ethical handbook for professionals, broad in nature and is not to be considered as legal advice, unless specifically stated as such by our legal staff with the corresponding letterhead. 
Interpretation The principles set henceforth in this handbook are to be applicable to all members world wide, save when there is a conflict between local legal conditions on particular cases.

The Right to Practice General laws enacted by host countries where AONH may practice should be followed, as they affect the scope of practice for all natural health care professionals. In many countries, different natural health modalities are controlled by statutes and often, as in Europe, are restricted to those who hold medical qualification. It is the member’s responsibility to be informed and abide by local laws and to have indemnity insurance for their benefit. The AONH will attempt to provide counsel to its members by keeping up to date information on changes made to laws in different regions of the globe, useful to members who may relocate their practice, or visit other States or Countries. This information should be taken as a general guide and is not intended to substitute legal advice which members may at times, need to seek.

Consent:

Expressed or implied consent is required by law, as any unsolicited touch of one person by another is legally regarded as an assault.

Negligence:

Members owe a legal and moral duty to their patients/clients to use their skill in caring, advising, or suggesting nutritional supplements to them. If said patient/client suffers injury or loss because of a member, the patient/client may claim damages in civil courts. Also, members who fail to work within the constraints of their competence may find themselves involved in legal proceedings. The Association of Natural Health recommends the use of written documentation, such as patient/client records to monitor progress and also to protect the health practitioner if ever needed in a court of law.

Confidentiality:

Member practitioners have an absolute duty to keep all information which they learn directly or indirectly in their professional capacity and opinions concerning patients/clients entirely confidential and not to divulge or reveal them to third parties. This obligation is not removed by death of the patient/client. Exceptions to this rule of confidentiality arise when the patient/client gives written and valid consent or requests to have a report for legal purpose or to serve as an expert witness. These requests should be channeled through the legal advisor. Confidentiality rules may be overstepped when the practitioner’s duty to society overrides duty to the patient/client in certain instances in which public safety may be in jeopardy or the patient/client may place his/herself in danger. Confidentiality rules may be broken when ordered to do so by a Court of Law. Courts have the power to order the disclosure and production of documents (including medical records).

Moral Conduct:

The AONH takes a very serious stance on moral appropriateness of its members, and has a serious view of members who enter upon sexual affairs with a patient/client. Members should be aware of dangers arising from personal relationships of an emotional nature with patient/client. Acts of indecent assault or exposure are criminal offenses in themselves but are not necessary for conviction to have been sustained for a practitioner’s behavior to be construed as professional misconduct.

Undue Influence:

Members must never enter into any financial arrangements for receiving patients/clients or solicit them by any means to accept treatment when they have not requested it. These actions may well invalidate the patient’s consent.

Cross-referral Procedures:

Members should maintain contact with general practitioners, surgeons, osteopaths, and dentists over mutually-shared patients/clients in a professional manner.   Law prohibits the exchange of money for referrals.

Relationships among Colleagues:
Mutual confidence and respect are to be fostered and practiced to raise the reputation of the professionals in the various natural health care fields. There are undoubtedly differences of opinions and antagonisms and clashes of personality of members from time to time, but the AONH looks to members to sort these out in a mature and sensible fashion without voicing them to the public. If this were to happen, it would be an issue of professional misconduct.

Criticism of other Practitioners:

Finding fault with other practitioners is discouraged and members are not allowed to criticize in public regardless if other practitioners are members of the AONH or not. This is strictly prohibited as this spirit of criticism goes against the cooperative and unison under which our mission statement and the very foundations of the AONH. This however, does not in any way inhibit members from expressing their concern regarding the competency of other practitioners by submitting them in writing to the AONH for review. The AONH will follow-up on patient/client or other member alleged negligence regarding professional competence and will investigate into the nature of such allegations to see if they are well-founded.

Advertising :

The Association is pleased to partner with its members and grants them the use of the Association of Natural Health logo to be used for advertising and promotional material after meeting the following criteria. 
•	Any document containing the Association of Natural Health’s logo must be submitted to the Association for review and approval prior to being disseminated. 
    •	Material to be placed online or in print should be void of 
        •	Sensationalism
        •   Claims of superiority
        •	Claims of curability
        •	False advertising
        •	Misleading, deceptive or self-laudatory rhetoric 
•	Material should be written in the best interest of the natural health care field, the practitioner and centered on their patient/client’s benefit

I do hereby commit  throughout the duration of my membership, to uphold the Code of Conduct and the Professional Standards as stated by the Association of Natural Health, the observation of which is mandatory for all members, and will incorporate my skills and experience  as part of the Association’s network of natural health practitioners. 
To the best of my ability, I will assist, counsel, and support fellow members of the Association if the need arises.

I solemnly pledge and resolve to faithfully abide to perform under this Association and fulfill my resolve as part of the Association of Natural Health.
